*Storm felled timber may be of help to tsunami victims

Environment conservation organizations call on the Swedish Government to send storm felled timber to Indonesia.

Three million cubic meters of sawn timber are needed for building new houses for the population of the Aceh province, severely hit by the tsunami.

After the tsunami catastrophe the population is living in temporary camps and more than half a million new houses are needed. The need for reconstruction is practically unlimited.

Sweden now have a unique opportunity to make the best out of two catastrophes. In Sweden there is a vast amount of storm felled timber needing markets and outlets and Indonesia needs huge quantities of timber as emergency assistance.

A contribution of Swedish timber would also save many hundred thousand hectares of rain forest that otherwise might be cut down.

The Swedish Government, SIDA, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the forest sector support the initiative.
