*Prices of standing timber came down in Finland in 2004

The real prices of standing timber bought from privately owned forests came down by 3.4 percent in Finland last year. The fall in nominal prices was slightly smaller.

The changes in the demand for different timber varieties were clearly reflected in the stumpage prices. There was a high demand for spruce timber and the price remained correspondingly high. The real stumpage price for spruce was 13 percent over the level of 1990, for example. The price of spruce timber now exceeds the price of pine.

The average stumpage price of pine fell last year by 3 percent from the previous year. The price of birch timber fell even more than pine. The prices of pulpwood fell by 5 to 10 percent last year, compared to the preceding year.
The price development is shown by the statistics of the Forest Research Institute
