*Increasing the use of wood

The Norwegian Agriculture and Food Department (LMD) has introduced a new industrial strategy aimed at increasing the use of wood and improving profitability in the entire value chain.

Today, the annual use of timber in Norway amounts to 0.55 cubic metres per inhabitant. On the basis of analyses of the market potential, the industry aims to raise the annual usage to 0.75 cubic metres per inhabitant by the year 2010. The strategy of the LMD is to support the industry’s goal of increasing the value added and the use of timber.

Four principal strategies have been defined in order to achieve the objective:

- develop innovation systems and value chains
- encourage creativity and product development
- expose, formulate and point out the potential
- provide a good operating framework for the industry

The LMD stresses that the whole value chain must function well. A healthy business requires a growing market and a functioning value chain from the market back to the raw material supplier.
